Magnolia "Maggy" Curtis works alongside Fatman, and acts as the operator of the "Lone Mercenary" during the majority of the game.

Previously a mercenary known as "Blue Magnolia," she is much younger than her partner Fatman at 25 years old, although every bit his equal.

Biography[]

She was originally born in an area controlled by the EverGreen Family, and was raised by her grandmother. After her grandmother passed away, she joined the EGF military and displayed exceptional talent as a soldier, quickly rising through the ranks to become an AC pilot. However, due to her seemingly unstoppable talent at battle, she grew bored of her life, and began disobeying orders and ignoring strategies. She instead became taken with the life of a mercenary during her many battles, and left the EGF after being inspired by the words of a certain Storker, choosing to work as an independent gun for hire.

After being partnered up with Fatman, she encountered the Leader of the Reaper Squad in battle, and faced defeat for the first time. Although she was able to survive thanks to Fatman's quick intervention, she lost her left arm[1] and was thus no longer able to pilot ACs. Burying the humiliation of her defeat deep in her heart, and still longing for the battlefield, she chose to work as an operator alongside Fatman from then on.

Throughout the story, Maggy grows increasingly conscious of the Lone Mercenary's increasing combat skill. Eventually, when J and The Foundation offer her a chance to pilot an AC again, she leaves Fatman and the Lone Mercenary to join the Reaper Squad.

Later, the Lone Mercenary is lured into an ambush by Reaper squad, and when he defeats K and D there, Maggy enters the fray as "M" and now piloting an AC mimicking her old blue AC. She retreats with J after receiving moderate damage, but not before they tell the Lone Mercenary and Fatman that the Reaper Squad's objective is to eliminate pilots capable of destroying the current world order, such as the Lone Mercenary and M herself. The Foundation plans to pit the two against one another to determine the one who can truly change the status quo.[2]

M's death

M's final confrontation with her former partners is at ALG742-181, one of the Foundation's last holdouts. She tells Fatman and the Lone Mercenary that this time, she will fight until the end. When Fatman questions her recent change in behavior, she tells them the legend of the first Dark Raven, a story relayed to her by her ancestors and which she herself believes. Fatman asks if becoming the next Dark Raven is M's ultimate goal, to which M — unable to find a concrete answer herself — replies that she simply refuses to experience defeat again, then engages the Lone Mercenary. When her AC is critically damaged in the ensuing battle, Fatman urges her to stand down but M remains defiant even when decisively defeated shortly afterwards. Upon hearing Fatman's last words to her, M says Fatman was always kind, and that even though she ultimately is not the one, she is satisfied with the outcome and says goodbye. Her AC then finally explodes,[3] and Voice of War reports that no body is found in the wreckage.[4]

Quotes[]

"Mission 01: 'Dirty Worker'"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
First cutscene, first line "You there? I'll go over the mission. There are two units up ahead. One is the Venide border guard. The other, a Sirius recon unit. They've been in a standoff the past two days." - -
- "Calm down, Fatman. Do you want to get paid or not?" - -
- "Then quit tomorrow. But today, you've got work to do." - -
- "Accelerating. We enter at low altitude, then deploy. Get some elevation once you deploy behind Sirius lines. Ready to boot OS." - -
- "They're sure to have seen us. Fire as soon as you get in range." - -
- "The stage is set. Now just wipe out everything that moves." - -
- "Kill every last one. That's the deal." - -
- "Where do you think you're going?!" - -
- "Good work, as expected. I'll go ahead and send a report to the client." - -
- "That's just how things have to be right now. You're better off not knowing what you don't need to know." - -
- "We have our next job to plan. Let's go." - -

"Mission 1-1"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Don't get caught off guard." - -
- "Fatman, any hostile readings left?" - -
- "Mission complete. Well done." - -

"Mission 1-2"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "We'll just have to deal with them, too. Take them all out." - -
- "It's those weaponized arm units we've seen around. They pack a punch without sacrificing mobility. Their armor is weak, though. Dodge their attacks and take them out." - -
- "The AC's taken care of. Now for the rest." - -
- "You can't deny their power. The Three Forces were able to reverse-engineer the AC system and create new parts. And that's thanks to the work of the Foundation." - -
- "You should always know your enemies." - -

"Mission 1-3"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Just another routine job. Destroy all enemies in the area." - -
- "Let's head home." - -

"Mission 02: 'Trickster'"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "City defense headquarters. We got your request. What's going on?" - -
- "You were infiltrated AND robbed of your weapons? Talk about inept!" - -
- "The request you sent us called for minimal force to capture the enemy. We weren't expecting much combat. This is something completely different. You'll have to up the pay 50%. Payment directly after completion. Deal?" - -
- "We're passing overhead now. Shall we keep going, commander?" - -
- "I'll amend the contract. Preparing to drop. Initiate mission." - -
- "Hunt down the enemy. Anything that moves is fair game." - -
- "There are lots of blind corners. Try not to run into trouble." - -
- "Everything's under control. You have our money?" - -
- "You don't have much of a force here. If you try and stiff us... I can't be held responsible for what our AC pilot does." - -

"Mission 2-1"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Or a deserter working with one. Don't let them get away." - -
- "All right. Let's head back." - -

"Mission 2-3"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "We're doing things a little different today. Pay for this jobb is based on performance. Work together with this allied AC to eliminate all targets. Each will get paid based on the number of targets they take out." - -
- "An odd request, but we did it. Let's head back." - -
- "I should hope not. Let's head back." - -
- "We're done here. Let's head back." - -

"Mission 2-5"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Our task is to wipe out the enemy. They'll show up once we kick the hornet's nest. You'd better save some firepower." - -
- "This is the main course. Dig in." - -
- "There's more to mop up. Don't let any escape." - -
- "They fought well, but not on your level. Well done. Let's head home." - -

"Mission 03: 'Rusting Steel'[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Oh, we're happy to hang back. But too much caution is a sign of fear." - -
- "Whatever. They can take care of themselves, can't they?" - -
- "I just hate people who act like they know everything." - -
- "UNAC troops?!" - -
- "We're on our own here. Our only play is to stay on the move and take them out one by one." - -
- "It's him... I remember those colors as well." - -
- "I'm sorry, Fatman. But you must have heard about them, right? We have no idea who they are or what they fight for. All we know is that they mean business. These guys... Running into them is why I quit mercenary work two years ago. They're the Reaper Squad." - -

"Mission 3-2"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "We were hired to drive these forces out, not to destroy them. But that's not much fun, is it? I'll negotiate a price. Take them down before they can escape." - -
- "Quick! They're getting away." - -
- "Kill confirmed." - -
- "Hurry up!" - -
- "Too late! head to the next point!" - -
- "All right! You got 'em!" - -
- "Not yet! There's still time!" - -
- "Now to clean up the rest of the hostiles." - -
- "There's more hostiles to hunt down." - -
- "Good work. Time to head home." - -

"Mission 3-3"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Our task is eliminating forces in this area. They're survivors from another battle." - -
- "I doubt they'll put up much fight. Watch out for reinforcements, though." - -
- "They'll regret it! Take them out one by one!" - -
- "Fatman, any left?" - -
- "You've proved yourself again. You're no ordinary mercenary." - -

"Mission 04: 'Peekaboo'"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "I have one question. I see that thing you've got there. Who are you with? Are you with the Foundation?" - -
- "That's not an answer." - -
- "What are your intentions? What do you have to gain from challenging us?" - -
- "Our UNACs have been customized by these guys. Instead of teaming up, just let them do their thing. Wait and see how things go." - -
- "The Foundation is a formidable opponent. Keep a cool head." - -
- "Concentrate. It's us or them." - -
- "They'll be on us next! Stay sharp!" - -
- "Disappointed that a mere merc survived? Or are you worried about the money?" - -
- "What sort of test is this, anyway? You starting another war with those things?" - -
- "Fine. We're going, then. Later." - -
- "Duly noted." - -

"Mission 4-1"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "The targets are autonomous drones. Not too dangerous, but you'll find them rather annoying. Watch out for incoming enemies. There's not a lot of room to maneuver in this place." - -
- "Keep your guard up. We're not done yet." - -
- "Fatman, is that it?" - -
- "We don't know what to expect. Be careful." - -
- "You won't survive many hits from that! Make it your primary target!" - -
- "I hear similar tech was found in the towers. It could be possible they are ancient weaposn that have gone feral." - -
- "The only thing we can be sure of is that they were built a long time ago. It seems that the Three Forces just want to claim what's inside. They're using the tech without any understanding of it." - -

"Mission 4-3"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Sounds a little too straightforward." - -
- "Grr, it's trying to rejoin its allies! After it! Take it down before it's too late!" - -
- "Fatman, any hostile readings?" - -
- "AC destroyed. Mop up the rest of the hostiles." - -
- "Fatman, are there any left?" - -
- "Hmm. I wonder if that's all it is." - -
- "Never mind. Let's go." - -

"Mission 4-6"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Don't run around and expose yourself too much. Take them out one by one." - -
- "You're getting so strong. I don't know whether to be in awe or afraid." - -
- "Yes. Of course..." "そう・・・そうよね・・・。" -

"Mission 05: 'Secret Game'"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Almost there! How many of you?" - -
- "We can't abandon them! Drop now!" - -
- "There's a faint signal from the helicopter. Hmph. Guess we gotta help, then." - -
- "Friendly reinforcement aren't far off. Defend the helicopter until then! We have to do something about that gun battery! Find a way to take it out!" - -
- "Chopper under attack! Get back there!" - -
- "The chopper's getting hit! What are you doing!" - -
- "Abort mission. Let's go." - -
- "See for yourself! Just get over here!" - -
- "No need to worry. We should have no problem handling that many." - -
- "What? Some kind of trouble?" - -
- "What the... What is going on?!" - -
- "Engage! Take them all out!" - -
- "Explain yourselves! What the hell is going on?" - -
- "You expect us to believe that?!" - -
- "We need to head back and get some answers." - -

"Mission 5-2"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "They've spotted us. But they're not ready to mvoe. Try to thin them out before they can react." - -
- "Mop them up before they can get organized." - -
- "Watch it. They're coming for you." - -
- "That means trouble. Intercept." - -
- "Take them out, now!" - -
- "That's the last chopper. Just scraps left now." - -
- "A job well done. Let's go." - -

"Mission 5-3"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "That's okay. You're good to go." - -
- "Close in on that unit and take it out!" - -
- "Fatman, is that all of them?" - -
- "Good work. Let's head back." - -

"Mission 5-6"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Enemy forces detected. Fire on sight." - -
- "Defend that helicopter at all costs." - -
- "Get that chopper off the ground, now!" - -
- "What is the Reaper Squad doing here?! Come on! Get up in the air!" - -
- "Enough of this! Engage them!" - -
- "AC destroyed!" - -
- "Hey, pilot. Wanna explain why takeoff was delayed?" - -
- "I know you're hiding something." - -
- "It's over. Let's pull out." - -

"Mission 05: 'Secret Game'"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "What about the Foundation? They made the UNACs, right?" - -
- "He's buying time, hoping to prepare their decisive blow while we're fighting. Or he's got nothing left, and just needs time to escape. That's what I'd bet on." - -
- "Let's ignore that fool and his death wish, and think about our next move." - -
- "Oh no. Nothing to draw their fire now." - -
- "We better. We're sitting ducks here." - -
- "I knew someone was out there, but the Reaper Squad? Why... ? What could they want?" - -
- "Maybe they were waiting for either us or that other AC to get destroyed?" - -
- "We're not out of the woods yet." - -
- "Keep moving so you aren't surrounded. Stay sharp." - -
- "I hope our ammo holds out!" - -
- "What are you doing here? You said something about 'selection' before. Tell us what you're trying to do do." - -
- "Who the hell are you?" - -
- "You?! You were the one that, that... !" - -

"Mission 6-1"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Our task is to wipe out all enemy units. Don't worry. I know you can do it." - -
- "They still have plenty of fight in them. Take them out ASAP!" - -
- "None of them were anywhere near a match for you. Not even close... They didn't stand a chance..." - -
- "Let's just leave, Fatman." - -

"Mission 6-6"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "Our job is to wipe out the forces holding this facility." - -
- "They wouldn't hire us if that was true. There may be more lying in wait. Stay alert." - -
- "I knew it! We're contracted to take them down, too! Do it!" - -
- "That bastard! Get them! It's do or die!" - -
- "Mop up the rest. We're not done here yet." - -
- "Sure..." - -
- "Two at once... Both were strong pilots. Your strength increases with every mission. I'm not sure the old me could have done that." - -
- "It's nothing. Let's get going." - -

"Mission 07: 'Gravity'"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "They haven't made that information public yet, but I understand that a timed virus was used. It's triggered to attack certain logic patterns — standard patterns used by all factions. It was executed perfectly. The Foundation has been planning this for ages. They've already occupied several towers, and they're looting those things from inside." - -
- "I'm still not sure. The word is that Reaper Squad is working for the Foundation. Reaper Squad... Hmm..." - -
- "Quiet. They're here." - -
- "Thanks, Fatman. I've... I've been pretending this wasn't for me. But that was the wrong thing to do. My soul has longed for battle all this time." - -
- "You!" - -
- "I knew it. Here we go, then. I know you can win." - -
- "This is no ordinary foe. Stay on your toes." - -
- "Small drones! Annoying pests! It's over if you let them distract you. Keep your eye on the prize. They move slower after shooting. That's when you need to focus fire." - -
- "It's maneuvering away from your attacks. Spraying fire isn't going to do much damage. Don't waste ammo. Hang back and wait for your chance. Fire in between its turns. Time it right, or you'll pay dearly." - -
- "Fatman. I have to go." - -

"Mission 08: 'Vendetta'"[]

Condition English Japanese Audio
- "That's right, Fatman. You're stuck with me a while longer." - -
- "Yes, Fatman. I have returned. Let's get started." - -
- "I'm not at my best. I'm falling back." - -
- "Yes, this is what I have to do." - -
- "It's the only way I know how to live. It's been my destiny since the day I was defeated. This battle the Foundation set up, Reaper Squad, they all lead to one goal. To find someone with your ability. To find you, and kill you." - -

"昔話をしてあげる。 世界が破滅に向かっていた頃の話よ。 神様は人間を救いたいと思ってた。 だから、 手を差し伸べた。 でもそのたびに、 人間の中から邪魔者が現れた。 神様の作ろうとする秩序を、壊してしまう者。 神様は困惑した。 人間は救われることを、望んでいないのかって。" ("Let me tell you an old story. VoW Personnel File 002[]

Maggy

Female, age 25.

An operator who works in tandem with Fatman. Once a promising mercenary who excelled in many missions, she retired as an AC pilot due to injuries suffered in battle two years ago.

While she is young enough to be Fatman's daughter, she is essentially his equal in their partnership.

VoW Personnel File 055[]

Maggy

Female, age 25.

Real name: Magnolia Curtis
A former mercenary who enjoyed success under the call name "Blue Magnolia" until suffering a crushing defeat at the hands of the Reaper Squad.

Grievously wounded, she was rescued by Fatman with whom she had only recently partnered. Though she survived, the lingering effects of her injuries made it impossible to pilot ACs, putting an end to her mercenary career.

She eventually returned to the battlefield as Fatman's partner with all appearances of having overcome her fall from grace. However, she merely hid the traumatic scars of humiliation in her heart.

A chance encounter with the Reaper Squad and her witnessing the capability of Fatman's new mercenary partner compelled her to take up arms again in a bid to reclaim her pride and soul.

Though her AC was destroyed in combat at ALG742-191, her remains were not found in the wreckage.

Strategy[]

The following information is "gray area" content — it may not be completely factual, and/or falls under YMMV territory.

Blue Magnolia's AC is armed with a powerful Laser Rifle and a weak H.E.A.T Machine Gun. It is recommended that you create an AC that is resilient to both of these damage types in order to fight her.

Blue Magnolia's combat strategy revolves around her AC's mobility. She will frequently boost drive off anything she can find, and attempt to get behind you and out of your lock-on sight. If your AC has a slow turning speed, it is recommended that you find a fairly open area in the arena that will prevent her from using her Boost Drive (one such location is literally right behind you after you start the mission).

Her AC is weak against Chemical damage, and moderately weak against Thermal damage. If you decide to use H.E.A.T machineguns against her, make sure that they deal high damage. If using a Battle Rifle, a quick lock-on time is recommended because of her affinity for dodging. After dealing a lot of damage to her, she will lose her left arm and will only be armed with her mini-Karasawa. Defeat her once again and you will then be ambushed by a Scavenger.

The Scavenger is accompanied by other Foundation autonomous arms. This stage of the battle requires a heightened situational awareness because of all the enemies that appear. Like Maggy, they are all vulnerable to Chemical weaponry. It is recommended that you deal with the smaller targets first, before concentrating on the Scavenger.

Trivia[]

  • Maggy's last name, Curtis, indicates that she is the descendant of Fran, the operator from the previous game.
  • When AC pilot Jessica Shylock went freelance, she partnered with an AC pilot from her Sirius days whose AC had a blue magnolia emblem.[6]
  • Her role in the story near the end of the campaign echoes that of Zinaida. The weapon loadout of her AC reflects this, using a powerful charging EN weapon in her main hand and a machine gun in her off-hand, with dual missile shoulder units, similar to Zinaida's final weapon loadout.
  • In Armored Core: Last Raven, regarding the ending where you have to destroy Jack-O and his AC Foxeye, his left arm is destroyed, highly identical when Maggy and her AC was also half destroyed in "Forgiveness of an Angel" and charges at you, as they both have the KARASAWA as their main right arm weapon.
  • Her AC closely resembles the other ACs used by the Reaper Squad, but with blue as its secondary color in place of red. In the Armored Core artbook -THE AFTER-, Magnolia's original AC is shown to be almost exactly the same, albeit with a reverse in color scheme and a much more distinct purple tint than blue.
  • Her AC is included in the DLC as a UNAC using both regular and cosmetic battle damaged versions of her parts.
  • Her emblem is nearly identical to that of Rosary's. The outer section which forms a heart shape is petals instead of thorns, and the flower in the middle is bloomed, in comparison with Rosary's bud.
  • It is also interesting to note that Maggy uses two emblems. One is her Blue Magnolia emblem, which looks very similar to Rosary's emblem, albeit the rose in the middle is replaced with a magnolia, and the emblem's main color is blue instead of red. The other one is the Reaper Squad emblem, but as opposed to other Reaper Squad emblems in which the animals depicted are holding weapons such as daggers and swords, the lion in Maggy's Reaper Squad emblem is seen holding a magnolia with a long stem. The shape of the magnolia is the exact same shape seen in her Blue Magnolia emblem.
  • During the encounter with the Foundation representatives, it is hinted that Magnolia Curtis may be one of many photo contributors to the Voice of War. She is presumed to use the identity of Fred Nakano (it might be a shared identity known only among AC operators) and takes snapshots by chance, sometimes illegally.
  • Her AC has been made into a Model Kit
  • When facing her in Story Mission 9, she appears to have more ammo than is standard, almost twice as much. Even if you force her to expend her ammo, it has no effect on the following cutscene, and both the KRSW and missiles will replenish its ammo count in her second encounter.

Speculation[]

The following information is "gray area" content — it may not be completely factual, and/or falls under YMMV territory.

  • The report by the Voice of War indicates that her body was not found in the aftermath of the battle. While it's possible she may have simply ejected from her craft, given that she was said to have sustained the loss of an arm that caused her to be unable to pilot an AC prior to joining the Reaper Squad, this could indicate that Maggy was converted into a Phantasma Being, thereby becoming one with her AC.
